Victoria White- doula and founder of Neurodivergent Birth, is on a mission to awareness about the unique perinatal experiences of neurodivergent individuals.
Victoria's life changed in 2022 when her daughter was diagnosed with autism. This sparked her curiosity about neurodiversity, and she began exploring her own neurodivergent tendencies. As she delved deeper into the subject, she realized that the perinatal period, including pregnancy, birth, and postnatal care, can be particularly challenging for neurodivergent individuals. To gain more knowledge, she extensively researched the topic, and her journey led her to understand the difficulties faced by neurodivergent individuals during these critical stages of life.
Victoria launched an Instagram page and a podcast to create a platform for discussion. The positive response to this much-needed space in the birth world encouraged her to have informative conversations with neurodivergent people, healthcare professionals, and researchers. This, in turn, led to the development of a competency workshop for birth workers. The "Supporting Neurodivergent Birth" workshop consists of two sessions. The first aims to provide an understanding of the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals during the perinatal period, while the second is a collaborative effort to explore ways in which birth workers can better support them. The workshop will cover topics such as the importance of language, gender bias, late diagnosis, the role of hormones, and more. It is estimated that around 15-20% of the population is neurodivergent in some way, making this workshop essential for any inclusive birth worker seeking CPD opportunities.
