Laura Spence is the founder and Managing Director of NeuroNatal Academy C.I.C.
With a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery, awarded with Distinction, and a Master of Science in Perinatal Mental Health, Laura possesses extensive clinical experience, making her a highly skilled midwife.
Her journey with a late diagnosis of ADHD and as a mother of three, including an autistic daughter with learning disabilities, grants her invaluable insights as an advocate for neurodivergent families. Vigorously passionate about social justice, Laura works tirelessly to promote change for marginalised groups, particularly neurodiverse families. In addition to her role at NeuroNatal, she manages a local support group for late-diagnosed neurodivergent women in Guernsey. She sits on the committee for the local branch of the National Autistic Society, further solidifying her commitment to community support and advocacy.
Laura is also an accomplished author and illustrator, creating "The Adventures of Granny Whistle Nose: Fly Little Bird," a children's storybook that exemplifies her dedication to advocacy and education. Recently shortlisted for the Midwife of the Year Award 2024 by Nursing Times, Laura serves on the Editorial Advisory Board for The Practising Midwife journal, contributing her insights to advance midwifery practice.
She continues to contribute substantially to women’s health in various roles, including serving as the Birth Trauma Service Coordinator at a Universal Children's Centre, a Sexual Health Midwife, and a Forensic Examiner for the Sexual Assault Referral Centre. Additionally, she is a prominent voice as the blogger and author for C-section UK, establishing herself as an influential figure in the field of maternal health.
Nichola, a dedicated and passionate educator, currently serves as one of the four directors at NeuroNatal Academy C.I.C. Her journey, which began in the corporate sphere where she honed her skills in accounting and finance, took a significant turn with the onset of motherhood. This life-changing event led Nichola to discover her true passion for education and the support of children, particularly those with neurodivergent conditions.
Nichola has a degree in business studies with an emphasis on economics. She acquired substantial experience as a teaching assistant in a secondary school, working closely with neurodiverse adolescents and children with hearing impairments. Now a certified teacher, Nichola governs matters of business, finance, and accounting while also embracing pastoral responsibilities, including the role of Head of Sixth Form and serving as the lead in Vocational Studies.
John Spence serves as a committed director at NeuroNatal Academy C.I.C. His extensive experience and empathetic approach make him an asset within the institution. John's dedicated advocacy for children's play and development stems not only from his tenure as a respected coach of a youth football team but also from his journey as a nurturing father to a neurodivergent, learning-disabled teenager.
In alignment with the Academy's mission, John, alongside his wife Laura Spence, is profoundly dedicated to improving the lives of neurodivergent families. Beyond his professional commitments, John finds solace and mental well-being through sports, exercise, and the recent adoption of cold-water swimming. His dedication, diligent work ethic, and genuine compassion make him an indispensable NeuroNatal team member.
The fourth director of NeuroNatal Academy C.I.C. plays a vital yet discreet role within the organisation, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to the team. Committed to enhancing the lives of neurodivergent individuals and their families, they focus on strategic initiatives and operational support that drive the Academy’s mission forward. Their background in medicine complements the diverse skills of the leadership team and underscores the importance of fostering an inclusive healthcare environment.
With a passion for promoting health equality, this director is dedicated to ensuring that the needs of marginalised groups are prioritised within the framework of the Academy's programs. Their commitment to supporting neurodivergent families during the perinatal period remains instrumental in shaping a more just and equitable society.
